Learner Success Story
Karima Bateman
Prior to starting at DTN Academy:
Karima has an extensive background in Hair and Beauty Industry but holds a strong personal interest in the hands-on elements involved in the Telecommunications Industry. Prior to registering her interest in the course at DTN Academy, Karima carried out some research into the Telecommunications Industry and noticed that it was a male-dominated industry. Karima wanted to prove to everyone that females can do just as well in this line of work and should not be held back. Karima noticed the Telecoms Engineer Training course advertised through the Universal Credit Website and believed this could be the course for her. Karima was doubtful as to whether or not she could complete the course but wanted to try her best and hopefully prove people wrong.
During our Course:
Karima enjoyed the first week of the course and found the introduction to copper and fibre cabling interesting. Karima did well, until she came across the SA001 Overhead training. Karima admitted that she had a fear of heights and knew this would be her greatest challenge to overcome if she was to complete this course. Although at her first attempt, she did struggle, after a long discussion with her tutor, who gave her advice and words of encouragement, Karima had another attempt and excelled, completing the climb and passed her assessment with flying colours. Karima really enjoyed the PIA S8 qualification, as she could build her confidence, conquering her fear of heights and being able to multi-span cables whilst climbing at different pole heights.
Upon Completion of our Course and Beyond:
Since finishing her course, Karima is desperate to secure experience in the field to further her skills and knowledge; hopefully progressing into management in the future. Karima believes the course has given her a brilliant taster of what to expect in the industry and fully believes this is the career for her. Karima has learnt a lot, especially in terms of the importance of carrying out a thorough risk assessment prior to starting any activity. Karima is really looking forward to being able to put the knowledge she has gained into practice.
A message from Karima:
“The tutors at DTN Academy have been brilliant, providing as much support as possible, even when I lacked belief, the tutors reassured me that I can complete anything I put my mind to. The tutors have given me self-confidence and I would like to tell all future female learners, that if I can do it, anyone can do it and it will be great to see more females in this industry. Thank you very much for the opportunity and I really appreciate all the help and for making me believe in myself and my abilities.”

A message from DTN Academy:
“We are delighted to see the progress Karima has made on her four-week programme with us. It takes great courage, not only to conquer a fear, but to also challenge stereotypes. Karima has excelled and we fully believe she will make an exceptional Telecommunications Engineer. We are sure Karima will have no trouble in securing employment and if we can help in anyway, we certainly will. Well done and best of luck for the future!”
