Learner Success Story
Joshua Jackson
Employer: MAP Group UK
Position: Telecommunications Engineer
Prior to starting at DTN Academy:
Having struggled at school, Joshua was never certain what career path he would take. He always believed that he was good with his hands, hence why he took on multiple roles which involved hands-on work since leaving school. Joshua has gained experience working in the Construction Industry as a Labourer, but more recently developed his customer service skills by working in the Hospitality Industry. In 2020, Joshua was recommended to do the Structured Cabling Network Engineer Training Course at DTN Academy by a friend who had recently completed the course, commenting on how good it was. Joshua contacted DTN Academy and asked to be put on the waiting list for the next course; as at the time, Joshua was only working on short-term contracts. Joshua then came to an Induction and with the prospects of securing full-time employment in a career which is very much hand-on, it’s something he couldn’t say no too!
During our Course:
Joshua instantly excelled on the practical aspect of the course and demonstrated his excellent work ethic when in DTN Academy’s Workshop and External Training Area. He was particularly enjoying the fibre splicing activities. With regards to the theory side of the course, this was not Josh’s favourite part and at times he did struggle. However, he did receive a lot of support from members of DTN Academy’s Teaching Team and was passing the units for the BTEC qualification. Joshua was taking part in all the sessions that were on offer and made a comment that he was really looking forward to learning how to Ribbon Splice in the final weeks of the course.
Joshua particularly enjoyed the practical activities that were part of the course!
Upon Completion of our Course and Beyond:
Having achieved all the qualifications that were on offer at DTN Academy, Steven attended an interview with one of the company directors at MAP Group UK, on the last day of the course.
A few days later, Joshua received a phone call from MAP Group UK and was offered a full-time job, starting immediately as a Telecommunications Engineer.
After a couple of months in the role, working primarily in Scotland, Joshua wanted to upskill himself even further. In liaison with his employer, Joshua enrolled onto a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship for IT, Software, Web and Telecoms with DTN Academy, allowing him to continue his professional development whilst on the job. By the end of 2021, Joshua hopes to have achieved a L2 in English, Maths, and ICT, and hopes to have achieved his Level 3 apprenticeship. He hopes to progress onto a L4 apprenticeship and establish himself as reliable Telecommunications Engineer, opening up opportunities to progress into a Team Leader / Management role in the future.
A message from Joshua:
Thank you to everyone at DTN Academy for helping me to complete all the coursework that I was struggling with and for helping me to secure a new career with MAP Group UK, in the Telecommunications Industry. I am looking forward to completing my Level 3 Apprenticeship with DTN Academy in the next year.
